About Us
The history of the Plumbers Union in Pittsburgh dates back to the late 1870’s, when it was affiliated with the Knights of Labor and later with the American Federation of Labor. By the fall of 1889, it was definitely decided to apply to the United Association for a charter, which was granted on May 17, 1890.
The original membership consisted of approximately 90 craftsmen.
Our contractors employ Local 27 members in many different construction applications. We work in the heavy industrial, commercial and residential sectors of the construction industry. Our workforce takes pride in partnering with our signatory contractors in providing sophisticated piping systems to end user. From underground installation to final connections of fixtures and equipment, a plumber is required to have all the physical and mental skills needed to get the job done right the first time.
No other organization serves the training needs of the piping industry like the United Association. For over a century, the UA has been training the most highly-qualified workers in the United States and Canada.
Over the past several decades, the United Association’s training programs have produced a stable, skilled workforce responsible for building and maintaining piping systems in the various industrial and residential facilities that make up the North American landscape.
